Navigating the Surgeon Struggle

Jan 28, 2024 | by Brad Bichey

Let’s take a look back at one year ago…

Burnout and depression were an issue before the pandemic and continue to have a negative impact on physician well-being; this year’s Medscape report shows that the problem is only getting worse,” said Leslie Kane, M.A., Senior Director, Medscape Business of Medicine.
Physicians are looking for substantive change in their working environments, including fewer hours or increased compensation.

Unfortunately, things aren’t any better now in 2024.

Recent surveys of surgeons in 2024 continue to reveal a startling reality: A significant portion of healthcare providers are still grappling with burnout and job dissatisfaction. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for systemic change in our approach to healthcare, particularly in the realm of surgical scheduling.

The Dual Challenge: Patient and Provider Pain Points

Patients are lost in a labyrinth of complex communication portals, experiencing confusion and frustration. This not only hampers their journey towards effective healthcare but also places an undue burden on the healthcare system. Simultaneously, surgeons and medical staff face a mirroring challenge with intricate, inefficient communication systems, leading to professional burnout and a feeling of being perpetually overwhelmed.

The Cost of Inefficiency: Surgeon and Staff Frustration

A chaotic schedule packed with patients of unknown surgical needs is a recipe for frustration. In a system where adding more patients only exacerbates the issue, it’s clear that change is not just necessary, it’s imperative.

Increased compensation and a more manageable work schedule were cited most often by physicians (45% and 44%, respectively), as solutions to alleviate burnout, and about one in three said more support staff, more respect from supervisors and colleagues, and lighter patient loads would make a difference.

The Solution: Streamlining with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

There are now solutions leveraging custom SaaS to revolutionize patient prequalification and triage. By implementing a SaaS-based approach, we can significantly streamline communication, ensuring that surgeons are presented with well-qualified patients, thus optimizing their schedule for their time and expertise.

The Future is Here

The integration of efficient SaaS systems in surgical practices is not just about solving current problems; it’s about setting a new standard for healthcare efficiency and profitability. Those who embrace this change will not only improve their workflows but will also be at the forefront of a healthcare revolution, outcompeting those who cling to outdated methods.

Embrace Change or Fall Behind

Together, we can transform the surgical landscape, enhancing both patient care and provider satisfaction. The question isn’t if we should change, but rather, how quickly can we adapt?
